Knee Replacement
Knee joint replacement surgery may be total where both sides of the knee joint are replaced, or uni-compartmental where only one side of the knee joint is replaced. The procedure is performed by separating muscles and ligaments around the knee to expose the knee capsule, and then the inside of the joint.
Knee replacement is surgery for people with severe knee damage. Knee replacement can relieve pain and allow you to be more active. Your doctor may recommend it if you have knee pain and medicine and other treatments are not helping you anymore

Dr Hugh Blackley FRACS is certified in orthopaedic surgery, arthritis and joint reconstructive surgery. His practice includes adult reconstructive surgery, total knee joint replacement, knee joint replacement, unicompartmental knee joint replacement and revision knee joint replacement surgery.
Knee Surgery is usually considered once other therapies, such as pain medications, have failed. Most people undergo knee replacement as a result of osteoarthritis of the knee joint.
You might want to ask your doctor about the possibility of hip replacement if you frequently experience any of the following:
- Pain that keeps you awake at night
- Little or no relief from pain medications
- Difficulty walking up or down stairs
- Trouble standing from a seated position
- Having to quit activities you enjoy, such as walking, because you’re in too much pain
